I love gardening, but I don’t love dragging a hose around every single day—especially in the Florida heat. That’s one of the reasons I fell in love with my EarthBoxes. I started with one, and now I have several of them sitting right outside on my covered porch.
Some are on the side that gets the morning sun and others get the evening sun, so I can pretty much step out my door and garden. I’ve grown tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, green onions and more in them, and they’ve made container gardening so much easier for me.
Why I Started Using EarthBoxes
I wanted something that would make gardening easier without giving up the part I enjoy. EarthBoxes have a water reservoir in the bottom, so the plants can take up water as they need it instead of depending on me to remember to water them every day. For bigger plants, I still keep an eye on the water because they can drink quite a bit, but things like green onions and herbs can go much longer.
What I really like is the convenience. I don’t need a big garden plot, and I don’t have to walk out into the yard every time I want to check on something. Mine are right on the porch, where I can step outside with my coffee and see what’s growing.
What I Grow in My EarthBoxes
I’ve used my EarthBoxes for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and green onions. One thing I’ve learned is that how often I need to refill the water depends a lot on what I’m growing. Bigger plants can go through quite a bit of water, especially when it’s hot, while green onions, herbs and other smaller plants don’t need nearly as much.
I also like being able to use the sunlight around my porch. I keep some EarthBoxes where they get morning sun and others where they get more evening sun. It gives me a little container garden right outside my door without having to turn part of the yard into a traditional garden.

What I Like Most About My EarthBoxes
The biggest thing for me is convenience. I like gardening, but I don’t want it to become another chore I have to do every single day. The water reservoir helps take some of that pressure off, and having everything up in containers makes it easy to check my plants, pull a few weeds or pick something for dinner.
I also like that I can grow quite a bit without having a traditional garden. If you have a patio, porch or small sunny area, you don’t necessarily need a huge yard to grow your own vegetables.
One Little Problem I Solved With a Pool Noodle
I honestly haven’t had many issues with my EarthBoxes. One thing I did worry about was mosquitoes getting into the water reservoir and laying eggs. And then there were the frogs. I am NOT interested in reaching for that fill tube and having a frog jump out at me. 😂
My solution was a pool noodle. I cut a small round slice off the end of the noodle, then cut a little piece out of the circle so I could squeeze it together and fit it into the top of the fill tube. It works like a little removable plug and helps keep mosquitoes, frogs and anything else from getting down inside the tube.
It’s nothing fancy, but sometimes the simplest little fixes are the ones that work best.

Would I Buy an EarthBox Again?
Absolutely. Considering I started with one and now have several, I think that pretty much answers the question. 😂 I like being able to step right outside my door and have tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, green onions and other things growing right there.
For me, the biggest benefit is that an EarthBox makes gardening easier. I still get the fun of planting something, watching it grow and eventually picking something I can actually eat, without having to maintain a big traditional garden.
The EarthBox I Use
If you’re curious about the one I’m using, this is the EarthBox garden kit I have and use at home.
Gardening doesn’t have to be complicated to be enjoyable. For me, having a few EarthBoxes right outside the door means I can grow some of my own food without turning gardening into another full-time job. I can step outside, check on everything, pick something when it’s ready and enjoy the whole process — which is exactly how I like it.
